Lost customs: papal portraits hung in church...


This photo was taken in the sacristy of the Church of St. Anastasia in Rome. Each painting had been commissioned during each pontificate and would have been hung in the rear of the church for the duration. After the death of each pope, each portrait was then retired to the sacristy.

My dad shared a few times that as a kid, in the lobby of their Catholic primary school, the nuns had hanging a big portrait of the Pope and another of the Ordinary. He still remembers that.
